Pick up Stitches

In which I illustrate picking up stitches along the front edge of the neck.

I am holding the yarn beneath/behing the neck edge and drawing a loop through to place on the right-hand needle. On the next row I will knit these stitches so that they are twisted because they tend to be a bit loose otherwise :-)

Can you explain what you mean by twisting the stitches? Thanks, Smidget

If you look at a knit stitch, there are two "legs" sitting on the needle. If you knit into the other leg (not the one you usually knit into), the stitch will be twisted - crossed at the bottom.

Try it and see.

I can't tell you which leg to knit into because not everyone has their stitches mounted onto the needle the same way - just try knitting into the other leg.

I have a question on my pick up stitches. I'm picking up for the neck and it says pick up across the back (I did)across the top of the left sleeve (I did) but then it says pick up eight stitches along the side of the neck. I have a problem here. All I HAVE is back of neck, top of right sleeve, front, top of left sleeve. Where in the heck do those extra stitches go?

You created the extra stitches as you were knitting into the front and back of the stitches at each end of your needle before you joined and knit in the round.

They form the sides of the neck.

If you forgot to create these stitches, your neck will be too high in the front.

Hello - I put my knitting down for the summer. Hope to pick it up soon. I wonder if anyone else didn't complete their sweater.
