DH wanted a hat and here it is (no pattern available) - Knitted in Maratona by Lane Borgosesia, an extra fine merino. Done top down with the top rectangle, body, and back flap done in heel stitch. Looks kind of like a chain mail helmet :-)

 

Basic directions for Thinking Knitters

Provisional cast-on and knit a square.
Pick up around the other three sides of the square
Increase at eight spots (every other row) until top of head is covered. I increase one in from the beginning and end of each of my four needles.
Work even until forehead depth is reached. Bind off front stitches.
Keep working back/neck stitches until desired length is reached.
